**Note: Her dam is listed as "QUEENIE (T.B.)" in the Appaloosa Stud Book Vol IV. Bob Hawkins told me that the name of the mare was QUEME, and that she was of Thoroughbred blood, he also mentioned that she was registered. I never could find QUEME in the American Stud Books. My more currents thoughts are that QUEME may have been a product of the American Remount Assn., possibly registered in those Half-Bred Stud Books (aka ARA). Having had the first three volumes...she does not appear there, but may in subsequent issues. Hal Kelley of Riverside, CA was the breeder of "Cricket" and owned by Hawkins friend and one-time partner Myron Freiberg, Riverside, CA...that is what the M.F. in her name stands for. PMM

and more Pat Mefferd research:

QUEME (Pronounced Kwe-Me) aka QUEENIE (TB) (Dam of CRICKET M.F. F-1868)

In 1975 I was researching a pedigree for a client whose horse traced to CRICKET M.F. F1868. Her dam was listed as QUEENIE (TB) in the ApHC Stud Book Vol IV, but no registration number was given. I could not find a mare named QUEENIE in the Jockey Club's American Stud Book who could have been her dam.

R.E. ÒBobÓ Hawkins and I had become friends, and I went over to his Double Rocking R Ranch and asked him about QUEENIE (TB). Hawkins told me her name was QUEME (not QUEENIE), when he had her. Hawkins had been the acting agent in the sale of QUEME and said that she Òwas of Thoroughbred breedingÓ.

Exactly what do the terms Ò(TB)Ó or Òof Thoroughbred breedingÓ mean? They do not always mean a registered Thoroughbred found in the Jockey Club's American Stud Books. ÒTBÓ can mean many things...A registered Thoroughbred in the ASB; a full blooded Thoroughbred, but never registered; a horse registered in the Half-Bred Stud Books under the authorization of the Jockey Club (later known as the American Remount Assn); any unregistered horse having a dose of actual thoroughbred blood; or any horse that is of the ÒThorougbhbred typeÓ (in other words...looks like a Thoroughbred).

QUEME was purchased by Hal Kelley, also of Riverside. It is not clear if QUEME was in foal to TONY BOY F1108 at the time of this sale. Unfortunately I did not ask more questions such as....Who was her sire and/or dam? What color was she? Who were you the acting agent for?

The name QUEME (or anything close to that spelling) does not appear in the Jockey Club's American Stud Books from 1918 thru 1953. CRICKET M.F.'s dam's name spelling was either a case of phonics (as lost in translation), illegible handwriting on the ApHC Application for Registration, miss read by an ApHC employee.... or....she was renamed QUEENIE.

No matter how the name is pronounced and/or spelled, QUEME or QUEENIE...There are those who list and/or promote CRICKET M.F.'S dam incorrectly.

The mare QEENIE (JC), foaled in 1935, a registered Thoroughbred in the Jockey Club's Amerian Stud Book could not have been the dam of CRICKET M.F. This QUEENIE (JC) spent her life in Ohio and Kentucky...refer to her ASB Stud Book entry and produce of dam record.

Ask yourself, why would someone ship the Jockey Club mare QUEENIE from Ohio to California in 1949 (most likely with a Thoroughbred foal at her side).....to be bred to the Appaloosa stallion (TONY BOY) and produce an Appaloosa foal here in California on March 11, 1950.....then be back to Ohio in 1950, to be bred to a Jockey Club stallion, in time to have an early Jockey Club foal in early 1951? Keep in mind that folks who breed race horses, strive to have their mares foal as close to but not before January 1st.

QUEENIE (JC) (Diavolo Ð Persian Maid x *Omar Khayam) : Chestnut mare, foaled 1935 Bred by A.B. Hancock, Paris, KY. Reference: Jockey Club's American Stud Book Vol XVII. Mare died 1953 (ASB XXI)

QUEENIE (JC) did have a race record....Raced 6 years, 115 Starts, 10 Wins, 11 Seconds, 18 Thirds, Lifteime Earnings - $7510. Reference: American Produce Record 1930-1979 (published by Bloodstock Research and Statistical Bureau).

QUEENIE (JC) raced from 2 to 7 years; she produced seven Thoroughbred foals, all but one raced; the first was foaled in 1943, the last in 1952......All but one of her Jockey Club foals up thru 1951 were bred by Mr. E.A. Bischoff, Cincinnatti, Ohio. She was barren in 1945, 1947 and 1950. Her last foal in 1952 was bred by Mrs. Helen B. Davis of Kentucky.

Even though this mare did not produce a Thoroughbred foal in 1950, it is my opinion that she never came west to California in 1949, more than likely with a young Thoroughbred foal at her side, to be bred to an Appaloosa. Not impossible, I agree, but look at the rest of the theory.

CRICKET M.F was foaled on March 11th, 1950...If this QEENIE (JC, foaled in 1935) were her dam, she then was quickly returned to Ohio to be bred to ARILOU (JC) to produce a DARK EMBASSY in 1951. Did they leave CRICKET M.F. behind to be raised as an orphan? This scenario just does not compute!
